Geckos Beachcomber DAY 3 - Surat Thani - Koh Samui

Days 3-4: Koh Samui
Our train arrives in the early morning and we transfer by bus to the ferry terminal (approximately 2 hours) for the two-hour ferry trip to the beautiful island of Koh Samui. In the afternoon we take a trip around the island in a songthaew, visiting the 15-metre tall Big Buddha. There’s time to take a dip in the cool tropical waterfalls of Na Muang and also to drop in to see the Mummified Monk. After this we head back to our secluded fan-cooled accommodation, situated in the north of the island. The rest of your time on Koh Samui is free to choose amongst a multitude of activities. Swim, laze in the sun, ride an elephant, dive or snorkel, take a optional day tour to the breath taking Ang Thong National Marine Park - the decisions are yours. In the evenings you can relax, dine on the beach at the water’s edge and soak up the pleasant tropical atmosphere.

After finally getting off the train we had breakfast at a local cafe before we waited for over an hour for the next train to arrive so we could start our bus journey. Hoping to have a bus seat to myself i got stuck with an ashtray of a man and had a horrid trip to the ferry. Boarding the ferry and making the trip to Koh Samuii everyone was really excited. I once again got laughed at for being so white by the thai people - who love white skins so i guess i should be pleased - and we finally landed on the island. We got onto a mini bus and travelled the lenght of the island to get to our beach bungalows where everyone was so happy. 5 minutes later we were all in the water - deliriously happy! The water is a great temperature and you can honestly stay in it for hours.

After our swim we had lunch and then went and saw some of the highlights of Koh Samuii - the big Buddah, the lookout, the Grandma and grandpa rock (basically male and femal genitals) and a momified monk. We were originally going to go to the full moon party but it was such an effort to go and we were pretty tired and our accommodation was having a party so we decided to stay at the hotel, have a group dinner and then cocktails on the beach with fireworks and lanterns. It was so beautiful! Great way to end the year!
